Nordic Track 990 Elliptical

Smooth Ellipticals 468x60

In 2007 the Nordic Track 990 elliptical trainer came out, an upgraded model of the 928. Nordic Track are in fact a subsidiary of a very large fitness equipment manufacturer, Icon. Reebok and Schwinn elliptical trainers are also actually manufactured by this company. One main feature this 990 has that the 928 doesn’t is the incline ability, which as well as changing the length of the strides also changes the shape too. This article is about tests that were carried out on the 990.

Different people of varying sizes were used to carry out tests. The 990 claims to take up to 325 lbs so we took one tester, a power lifter, who comes in at 280 lbs. Another couple of testers like to workout daily at least 5 times a week. The first negative came due to the foot peddles which are non-articulating. Though the power incline with its 5 setting was liked, when we tried to use it in an intense workout the trainer became shaky and noisy. The console also needed to have a bigger display.

The owner of the machine was also not happy about the Ifit technology as it only came free for the first month and then you have to pay 15 dollars a month to keep using it! It is basically a marketing program to make money for the company. For those of you who do not know what Ifit is, you get eight weeks of nutrition, strength training and aerobics based on your individual requirements.

The Nordic track 990 elliptical trainer that we tested was purchased online and then for the assembly the owners hired someone. There were parts missing though this was slowly resolved when contacting customer services. Owned now for 45 days there have been no serious problems. Wisley, these owners paid out for the extended warranty. The standard warranty offers a year of parts and labor but with the knowledge that problems tend to occur with Icon equipment, the extended warranty is the right move. After all if you are paying less than twelve hundred for an elliptical trainer this means its likely components and construction have gone through cost cutting during manufacturing.

If you are not going to be using it regularly or for long or hard workouts, then this machine will do fine. So roughly 3 days a week for 30 minutes each time. For more details on long term problems look at the Nordic Track 928 elliptical reviews.
