How to Use Ellipticals

Health clubs and gyms today will have rows of elliptical trainers all being used by a wide variety of people, different ages and different sizes. Ellipticals are popular amongst people wanting to workout because they allow you to have an efficient workout that is low impact. So people who maybe normally couldn’t use aerobic equipment such as people with back problems, bone problems or the very over weight can now workout comfortably and safely.

But if you are new to elliptical machines you may be wondering how to use ellipticals. They are very simple to use and you would probably work it out by trial but here are some things you should know so that you do it correctly.

Arms - A lot of elliptical trainers have arm levers that mean you get an upper body workout meaning you are burning a lot more calories. When you use those levers do not lean on them to support your weight. Of course doing an upper as well as lower body workout is your choice but it is definitely worth it.

Program - A lot of the machines at health clubs have a digital counter on which you can count calories so you have an idea of how many you have burned off. Make sure though that you input your correct weight, sex, age and height.

Posture - Keep your body and your head upright, do not slouch. A slouched posture will mean you are not getting the maximum benefits from your workout.

Stride - Some of the new ellipticals allow you to adjust the stride length. Shorter strides work out your butt more, and long strides the leg muscles more. If you do have that choice on the machine you use select a stride that is comfortable and that matches your goals.

Elliptical machines seem very advanced but they are actually simple and fun to workout on. Once you get used to them you will love it!
